India: prices of pulses will decrease due to the record harvest

During the current sowing Indian farmers expanded the area under pulses in response to the sharp rise in prices caused by poor harvest and strong domestic demand. According on September 2, the crop area under legumes was increased by 33% to a record 14.2 million hectares.

Indian Association of grain and leguminous expects to harvest at the level of 7.8 mln tonnes, which is 40% more than last year. "The prices of some bean can be reduced by half thanks to a good harvest," said Pravin Dongre, Chairman of the Association. "Last year, high prices hit consumers. Now the sharp decline in prices will negatively affect the farmers," he added.

The price of mung beans has fallen below the minimum support costs. The same thing can happen with other kinds of bean.

Australia and Canada, major suppliers of pulses to India, may also collect a good harvest that will put additional pressure on prices.

India consumes about 22 million tonnes of pulses annually and is heavily dependent on imports. The main suppliers of peas and lentils to India are Canada and the United States, chickpeas are Australia and Russia, Masha and Kana (pigeon peas), Myanmar.

"We need to protect Indian farmers against cheap imports. Otherwise, next year they will abandon the bean in favor of other crops, which again will lead to a price rally," – said Nitin Kalantri, a recycler from the Indian state of Maharashtra.
