Ukraine has completed the sowing of buckwheat with a significant backlog of plan. Planted only 57% of the planned area of 55 thousand hectares, which is 45% less than it was at the same date in 2018, according to analysts at UkrAgroConsult.
In connection with the record low crops of buckwheat yield in the country may shrink to historic lows.
Their own crops are insufficient to meet domestic demand and will need to increase the import of buckwheat and derived products, said the experts of the analytical company.
In the 2017/18 season Ukraine imported 48 thousand tons of buckwheat and its by-products, mainly from the CIS countries. Thus in the season of production of buckwheat in Ukraine was enough to meet domestic needs.
"Import growth against the background of sufficient supply of buckwheat on the domestic market led to a sharp collapse of prices for buckwheat grain. This led to a further decline in the profitability of production and, as a consequence, a significant reduction of crops for the last two years", — said the expert.
