The effect of "smoky glass" in greenhouses Dutch scientists are exploring
Plants need light in order to successfully vegetate and bear fruit. In greenhouse crop production, there is a Golden rule: if you increase lighting by 1%, provides 1% more crop. Is it possible to achieve the best results using the so-called "diffused glass"?

Scientists from the divisions of greenhouse horticulture at Wageningen University carried out a large-scale experiment involving a group of greenhouse companies in the Netherlands.

"Scattered glass" feature that brings sunlight to your plants in a special way: the light rays are refracted in different directions, creating the effect of "haze".

A few years ago in a series of experiments, it was concluded that glass with a high coefficient of opacity provides better performance in the greenhouse.

But how correct these findings? And does it require less energy when you use the "scattered glass"? Many Dutch manufacturers still in doubt, preferring to establish a regular glass in the construction of new greenhouses.

Scientists from the Wageningen University want to find out eventually, how does "fog the glass" on productivity and energy consumption. With this purpose in the fall of 2018 started a study involving a large group of growers of various crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries. These manufacturers are currently thirteen is used as normal and diffuse glass to see clear result.

In the greenhouses of the participants of the experiment, the scientists WUR analyzes climate data and production data for recent years. Moreover, all greenhouses have installed light sensors. The first results of the experiment will be presented this fall.
