The discovery, published in "Medical and veterinary entomology", can help the plant breeders in developing resistant to the fly of sheep with the aim of improving the welfare and productivity of animals.

As you know, flies are carriers of various diseases selhozgodu. And the sheep also are in the risk zone. Each year, the world sheep losses due to diseases transmitted by flies, in the amount of $ 280 million.

With specific regard to Merino, the smell of the wool, inherited, there are specific essential compounds which allow the flies to detect prey. At the same time the intensity of the odor in different individuals varies, and that gives hope for breeding. Crossing the animals with the least smell of wool, in the end, it is possible to achieve obtaining a population of Merino, resistant to the fly.

To do this, scientists are working on creating a simple tester that defines the "pahuchest" animals.

"Our research shows that sheep are Merino obviously there are individual differences in the chemical composition of their hair. Wool, is attractive to flies, contains volatile substances, which was not unattractive in the wool," said Dr. Johan Griff from the Department of industry of Australia.
