Association of agricultural cooperatives of Spain first published the forecast of grain harvest in the current year to 15.2 million tonnes, which is the fifth worst harvest since 1990.
The gross grain harvest will drop to 15,233 million tonnes, which is 35% less than the harvest last year and 26% less than the average for the last three years.
The low level of rainfall throughout the growing season and high temperatures since mid-March in almost all the regions of Spain have sharply reduced future yield of grain.
The production of wheat will decrease to 3.692 m t (7,234 million tonnes last year), hard wheat – up to 1,120 (1,180) million tons, barley – up to 5,730 (9,405) mln t, corn – 3,223 (3,598) million tonnes.
A poor harvest will lead to increased imports of grain.
