India intends to increase import duty on wheat
The government of India is discussing the prospect of higher tariffs on wheat imports from the current 20% to protect the domestic market in the period of sowing, writes Bisiness Line
In early November, the government of India increased import duty on wheat from 10% to 20% to support domestic farmers. However, as at 15 December sowing area of wheat was still 2% less than a year ago on the same date.
The duty of 10% did not prevent an active private import. From April to October inclusive private traders have imported about 1 million tons of wheat.
