The state needs to urgently intervene in the regulation of the meat industry to prevent its extinction in Russia. This was stated by the Governor of the Belgorod region Evgeny Savchenko, speaking at the panel discussion "Prospects for Russia's domestic meat".

Belgorod region is the leading region for the production of meat. According to its leader, last year, the region produced more than half a million tons of meat, which is comparable with indicators of the total meat production in the USSR in 1990.

"The country can occur overproduction of meat, - says Evgeny Savchenko. – When I look at the industry, see, we're not able to produce 4-6 million tons of poultry meat, and 10-12; 2.2 million tons of pork, and 8-10; the beef is a little more difficult, but there can also be 3-4 million tons per year. In my opinion, within 7-10 years, Russia can produce 2-25 million tons of meat".

According to Yevgeny Savchenko, country authorities need to take into account this fact and to farmers send intelligible signals.

"We expect that the government will say: grow, no ograniczenie not, and when the internal market will be filled, we guarantee you export in such volumes," said the Governor. – If not, then it is necessary to impose quotas on meat production, as is done in Europe and in the United States."

Among other risks to the domestic producers of meat Yevgeny Savchenko called Russia's dependence on genetic laboratories of the West, as well as reducing the competitiveness of domestic producers.
