A bill prohibiting the cultivation of plants using GM technology, the state Duma adopted in the second reading, the correspondent of IA REGNUM June 22. "Banning the cultivation and breeding of plants and animals, the genetic program is changed using the methods of genetic engineering and containing genetically engineered material, the introduction of which may not be the result of natural processes," reads the text of the document.

An exception is made for "breeding those plants and animals during examinations and research work."

The results of monitoring of human exposure and the environment to genetically modified organisms and products obtained using such organisms or containing such organisms, the Government of the Russian Federation the right to establish a ban on the import into the territory of Russia of genetically modified organisms intended for release into the environment, and (or) products obtained using such organisms or containing such organisms, it follows from the text of the bill.

Third reading of the government's initiative is scheduled for June 24.
