FruitMasters Dutch company, which this year celebrates 20-year anniversary, presented experimental garden for the cultivation of new varieties of cherries
New breeding methods will then be passed 425 to affiliated producers of the company. 40 new varieties planted in the experimental garden in 2014. Of these, three or four varieties in the near future will become commercially available.
"Every year the cherry turnover increased by 10-15%. This also applies to the number of farmers growing this berry, and the volume of production. Production of sweet cherries is very interesting in a financial sense, because in contrast to the usual fruits like apples or pears, the proceeds from the sale of berries arrives immediately after harvest. The bigger the berry, the greater the profit. The local market is certainly the most important for sweet cherries, but we supply in a variety of countries, reaching even the Asian market", says Leonard Camphor, commercial Director of FruitMasters Holland.
In recent years FruitMasters invests primarily in technology of cultivation and fruit processing.
