Production of grapefruit in South Africa grew by 56% in 10 years
The Association of citrus growers of southern Africa (CGA) has summarized the results of decades of development of production of grapefruit in the country

In 2006, the share of white grapefruit in the total volume of supply of these fruits was 69%. Since then has produced these fruits in South Africa switched to producing pink or red grapefruit, answering the demands of consumers. At the moment 90% of all grown in the country of the fruits refer to the red or pink varieties and only 10% white.

By 2016 the volume of exports of fruits increased by 56% – from 9.5 million boxes to 14.8 million boxes of 15 kg or by 142.5 thousand tons to 222 tons.

Ten years ago, the main importers of grapefruit were the countries of East Asia. This region accounted for 40% of all deliveries, with most of this amount went to Japan. Now the share of exports in the countries of this region is 34%, and among the main countries buyers of South African grapefruit in the region, along with Japan, South Korea stands out. 45% of grapefruit from South Africa is now sent to EU countries except UK. The share of exports to this country over ten years decreased from 12% to 6%.

The share of exports to Russia increased from 4% to 8% in North America – from 3% to 5%, Middle East – from 1% to 3%, and the share of exports to African countries remained at the level of 1%.
